Conducted research in the field of Environmental Chemistry, focusing on ascertaining the effect of incorporation of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles (CuO-NPs) on the properties and performance of poly(vinylidene) fluoride/poly (vinylpyrrolidone) (PVDF/PVP) composite membranes.

The composite membranes were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, contact angle measurements, mechanical properties, and porosity. The performances of the composite membranes were determined via permeability, selectivity, antifouling measurements (Na+, Ca2+, and Fe3+) salt ions, as well as Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), and a release test of Cu2+ ions through a cross-flow filtration system.

The incorporation of CuO-NPs into the PVDF/PVP membrane modified the membrane structures, as indicated by the appearance of a new absorption peak in the FTIR spectrum for Cu-O bond strain and the transition of the α to the β phase of PVDF, as shown in the C-F bond stretching. It also reduced the contact angle value up to 57.07°, increased the porosity, and improved the mechanical strength of the membrane up to 65.56% and 4.23 MPa, respectively. The incorporation of CuO-NPs also improved the performance of PVDF/PVP membranes in nanofiltration, as indicated by an increase in permeability (up to 27.89 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1) and permselectivity up to 79.46%, 20.30%, 46.73%, and 84.79% toward BSA, Na+, Ca2+, and Fe3+, respectively. Moreover, the increase in Flux Recovery Ratio (FRR) against BSA and Na+, Ca2+, Fe3+ salt ions is up to 71.80%, 79.53%, 78.08%, 74.65%, respectively. The higher fouling ratio values (Rt, Rr, and Rir) than that of PVDF confirm the fouling resistance of the composite membranes. The PVDF/PVP/CuO-NPs membranes demonstrated good durability and stability after 6 cycles of use, as indicated by the small amount of Cu2+ ion release of 0.005 mg/L.
